Sonipat, also spelled Sonipat, has ancient significance as it is believed to have been formed as Swarnaprastha (meaning Swarna = Gold; Prastha = Golden City Square) by five Pandava brothers during the time of Mahabharata. As per another legend, this position belongs to Raja Soni, the thirteenth descendant of Arjuna, one of the brothers of Pandava.
It is also assumed that the first reference to this city comes from the epic Mahabharata, and that this was one of the five villages requested by the Pandavas instead of the kingdom of Hastinapur. The remaining four villages were Panprastha (Panipat), Baghprastha (Baghpat), Indraprastha and Tilprastha (Tilpat). The city was also noted earlier by the great grammarian Panini in his famous Ashtadhyayi, indicating that the city was already around 600 B.C.
