Ahmedabad (also known as Ahmadabad) was founded by Muslim ruler Sultan Ahmed Shah, Ahmedabad is India 's sixth largest city (approx. 6.5 million) and India's first UNESCO World Heritage City. It is the commercial centre of the state of Gujarat, although it is not the state capital, the twin city of Gandhinagar, 30 km to the north. While it's not very well known as a 'tourist' spot, it's definitely worth a visit. In reality, the fact that there are fewer visitors here would always give you a warm welcome. Gujaratis is also renowned for their hospitality.
The town was established in the 11th century by King Karandev 1 and was originally named "Karnavati." For more than 400 years, the Hindu kingdom of Karnavati reigned until 1411, when Sultan Ahmed Shah invaded Gujarat and the town was renamed Ahmedabad after him.
